This letter, addressed to William Wilson & Sons of Bannockburn near Stirling, is an order for supplying lengths of tartan. The letter, dated Forres, 19 September 1829, contains on the reverse, a drawing of the Macleod tartan.

The customer requests seven yards of 'the finest soft tartan you can make'. He realises it is 'a small order' but trusts 'you will execute it with your usuall punctuality'.

Wilsons' tartan weaving firm, reputedly founded in 1724, monopolized the supply of tartan cloth to the army up until the mid-19th century. They also met the ever increasing public demand for tartan.
