Jeton (Reverse), of Mary, Queen of Scots

A jeton was a counter or token used to represent money. This is the reverse of a silver jeton of Mary, Queen of Scots dating from 1560.

The reverse has two crowns, one above the other, with a representation of a landcsape below. Above is a cloud containing stars in the shape of a third crown. The Latin inscription translates as 'And waits for another'. The reverse bears the date, 1560.

Mary had not renounced her claim to the English crown and the 'another' in the inscription is thought to refer to the crown of England. However, by avoiding explicitly mentioning England, this could officially be denied.
