This is the back of a letter, dated 7 November 1833, written by Sir David Wilkie, Scotland's most celebrated early 19th century artist. The letter is addressed to William Allan of Parliament Square in Edinburgh.

Born in Fife in 1785, Wilkie moved to London in 1805. He painted in the style of the great Dutch and Flemish painters. His Scottish genre scenes are documents of social history and influenced a generation of Scottish and English genre painters.
