Back of a gold mourning ring

This is the back of a gold mourning ring commemorating Ann Rigg who died on 2 March 1796, aged 34.

The back of the ring is inscribed 'Ann Rigg d. 2 Mar. 1796 aet. 34'.

At funerals in the 18th and 19th century, wealthier families distributed rings and lockets made from the hair of the deceased, or engraved with the name and date.
