Back view of a silver cup made in Edinburgh
Add to album

This is the back of a silver cup, made by Marshall and Sons in Edinburgh, and presented to the Reverend John Burns in 1827 by the members of St Andrews Church in Montreal in Canada.

The lower half of the bowl has alternate plain and decorated vertical panels. Above these panels, on the back of the cup, is engraved an open bible surrounded by a laurel leaves with the text underneath, 'The way, the truth & the life'.

Montreal was a flourishing fur trade centre. Due to the number of Scots living there, a Presbyterian Church was established in the early 1780s.
