A scimitar is a short curved sword used chiefly by Turks or Arabs. This detail shows the hilt of a scabbard owned by Tipu Sultan, ruler of Mysore in India.

The silver mounted hilt bears Arabic inscriptions.

Tipu Sultan fought against British rule in India and was defeated in 1799 by the Scottish General Sir David Baird. The General had formerly been one of the Sultan's prisoners.
