From Crossraguel Abbey, near Maybole, Ayrshire
These book mountings were among a large number of brass objects and fragments found at Crossraguel Abbey near Maybole in Ayrshire. They date from the 15th or 16th century. The mountings would have fitted around a book.
Book mountings such as these could be clipped together to hold the book shut. (These two mountings do not constitute a matching pair.)
Crossraguel Abbey was founded in the early 13th century as a house of Cluniae monks. Most of the original buildings were replaced in the 14th and 15th centuries. The abbey buildings are now in the care of Historic Scotland.
