Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny (proof), of Dundee, Angus
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper proof halfpenny trade token of Dundee in Angus. Dated 1797, the token was designed by James Wright Junior and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Wyon.

The reverse depicts a man working or 'heckling' flax. The surrounding text reads '3.336 TONS FLAX & HEMP IMPORTED HERE IN 1796: VALUE. L.160.128-'.

Trade tokens varied in quality from crude lead discs stamped with initials to elaborate pieces of craftwork from the die-sinkers with vivid depictions of industrial or commercial scenes.
