This is the stern of a wooden church-ship model built in the late 16th or early 17th century. The model was probably constructed to celebrate the marriage and safe return to Scotland of James VI and his bride, Anne of Denmark, in 1590.
The rail around the stern of the model bears a gilded version of the monogram of Christian IV of Denmark, James VI's brother in law.
A further link between Denmark and Scotland is the presence of the Scottish shipbuilders Balfour and Sinclair in the shipyards of Christian IV.
