Awarded to John Mathieson

Medal (reverse) of the Highland Society of Glasgow
Add to album

This is the reverse of a silver medal of the Highland Society of Glasgow, awarded in 1840 to John Mathieson, an apprentice smith and bell hanger, for his good behaviour and exemplary conduct.

The reverse is inscribed, 'Given to John Mathieson / Smith & Bell Hanger / In testimony of his good behaviour and exemplary conduct during his Education and Apprenticeship / 1840'.

Industry and agriculture attracted Highland men and women to leave their homes to seek work. In the 18th and 19th century, Clydeside in particular absorbed huge numbers of Highlanders to work in mills, mines, factories and shipyards.
