Bronze medal (obverse) of Perth Golfing SocietyThis is the obverse of a bronze medal of Perth Golfing Society dating from 1838. The badge was presented to the society by the Duke of Buccleuch. The obverse has a crowned, laurelled thistle in the centre of crossed golf clubs. The inscription reads 'PRESENTED TO THE ROYAL PERTH GOLFING SOCIETY BY THE DUKE OF BUCCLEUCH'. The Dutch game of kolf, played over short distances, usually on ice, and was similar to putting. The word 'golf' first appears in the Scots language in 1457, when the game was banned by Act of Parliament because it was interfering with archery practice.
