This is a detail of a woman's handsewn summer dress of cotton muslin. It is printed with a floral pattern in shades of lilac, the design arranged to form separate flounces. The dress was made in Britain around 1855.

The dress is very similar in pattern, material, dye and date to a sample given to the Museum in 1858 by Crum's of Thornliebank in Glasgow.
