Coin (reverse), demy, from reign of Robert III

This is the reverse of a gold demy minted at Edinburgh between 1390 and 1406 during the reign of Robert III. The coin was worth two shillings and six pence Scots.

The reverse has a long saltire cross, with a fleur-de-lys to each side and a trefoil above and below. The Latin inscription translates as: 'Christ Reigns, Christ Conquers, Christ Commands'.

The reign of Robert III saw the introduction of gold lions and half-lions. These coins bear no mint names but like all succeeding gold coinages are thought to have been struck only in Edinburgh. Robert III also had mints at Aberdeen, Perth and Dumbarton.
