possibly made at Prestonpans in East Lothian
This earthenware beaker was made to commemorate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1897. It was possibly made at Prestonpans in East Lothian.
The beaker is transfer-printed with a bust of Queen Victoria and the inscriptions '1837 / DIAMOND JUBILEE / 1897', 'VICTORIA, QUEEN OF GREAT BRITAIN AND IRELAND / AND EMPRESS OF INDIA' and 'FROM / GENERAL SIR ROBERT & LADY / CADELL / COCKENZIE HOUSE / COCKENZIE'.
Pottery has been made in Scotland since prehistoric times, but it was not until the 18th century that domestic pottery began to be mass produced on an industrial scale. By the early 1800s, potteries in Musselburgh, Portobello and Prestonpans, all near Edinburgh, were producing a wide range of wares, from soft-paste porcelain to transfer-printed earthenware.
