Body armour, developed for use by British forces in World War II

This body armour was developed by the Medical Research Council for use by British forces in World War II. The new body armour was only used in action once, when it was worn by airborne troops during the battle of Arnhem in 1944.

The three cloth-covered steel plates cover the chest, back and abdomen, shielding the body's vital organs. The design was based on research into First World War casualty statistics and the study of wounds sustained in the early years of World War II.
