Drill models

This boxed set of military drill models, with wooden blocks representing units of men, dates from 1870. Sets such as this allowed officers to practice drawing up infantry units in different formations.

Boxed set of military drill models, for use in conjunction with the 1870 edition of 'The Field Exercise and Evolution of Infantry', 1870

Although the government started to buy up large areas of land in the 1850s to allow training of troops in larger concentrations, officers had few opportunities to gain practical experience of manoeuvring large bodies of men.
