This maiolica dish was made in Urbino in Italy, perhaps at the Guido di Merlino workshop, between 1540 and 1555.

The dish is decorated in polychrome with the story of 'Perseus and Andromeda'. Perseus holds Medusa's head in his left hand, with her corpse at his feet. In the centre Andromeda, her back turned, is comforted by her parents. The monster appears behind a tree.

Perseus, having beheaded the snake-haired monster Medusa, rescued Andromeda from a sea monster whilst on his return journey. Andromeda, bound and chained, clung to her parents King Cepheus and Queen Cassiope of Ethopia and screamed as she heard the monster return from the sea. Perseus, succeeded in slaying the monster and as a reward Perseus claimed Andromeda as his bride (Ovid, Metamorphoses, IV).
