This sword with its steel scabbard was one of those carried by Sir Colin Campbell during his long military career. In 1863, the year of his death, Campbell gave it to his friend Colonel Edmund Haythorne, who had been one of his staff officers in the Crimea and who later became a General. The sword itself is of a style which became popular around 1815.
Campbell's gift 'to his old Friend and Comrade' is recorded by the inscription etched on the blade.
