Model, of Sloop-of-War

This wooden model represents a British 'Sloop-of-War' from 1771. It is built to a scale of 1:96.

The model has 16 guns and is brig-rigged with two masts and square sails. This type of rigging was not used for Royal Navy sloops until 1771.

The name 'sloop' is derived from the Dutch 'sloep' meaning a ship's boat. By the end of the 18th century the term was used to describe a class of naval vessels of 8 to 18 guns. The naval sloops were used to escort ships-of-the-line and to patrol and protect commerce.
