Bowl (2 of 2)

This shows the interior of a white glazed transfer-printed earthenware bowl, made by the Glasgow potters J. & M.P. Bell & Company Ltd. The pattern is called 'TAMERLANE' and the bowl was made between 1881 and the 1920s.

The bottom of the bowl is decorated with a black transfer-printed scene of two Japanese figures, one of them hanging from a tree branch. The same pattern appears on the outside of the bowl but here, on the inside, all the colour has worn away.

This company was one of the biggest and best known potteries in Scotland. It was founded by the brothers John and Matthew Perston Bell and was in production by 1842. After John's death in 1880, the new limited company continued production.
