Souvenir box, with view of ScarboroughThis enamelled souvenir box was made in south Staffordshire in the late 18th or early 19th century. Thousands of comparable boxes, decorated with transfer-printed or enamelled views, were produced in South Staffordshire in this period. The lid is painted with a 'VIEW OF SCARBOROUGH'. A mirror is fitted inside the lid. Scarborough was one of the first modern seaside resorts. As early as the late 17th century a spring on the shore was being promoted as a drinking spa. By the mid eighteenth century people were enjoying bathing in the sea at Scarborough. The souvenir trade sprung up as a result of the influx of visitors.
