This set of silver-mounted bagpipes of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 12th Battalion, dates from 1918.
The bagpipes are decorated with the green and red striped ribbon of the Croix de Guerre, a French gallantry award. The unit as a whole received this award from the French government for its service alongside French troops in the battle of Dorain in Salonika in 1918.
The bagpipes were presented to Pipe Major James Douglas. Douglas had been a regular soldier and had rejoined his regiment in 1914. He later emigrated to Canada and served in the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders.
