Jug, by Zelda Mowat of Strathdon Pottery
Add to album

This salt-glazed stoneware jug was made by the Scottish artist Zelda Mowat of Strathdon Pottery. It was made in 1977 and purchased for the Scottish Crafts Collection in 1980.

The large jug was made in tan and gold colours, with a wavy line wiped through the slip to reveal the gold-coloured body underneath. The pulled handle starts on the rim and finishes in a large round thumb mark two-thirds of the way down the pot.

During the 1980s the Scottish Development Agency purchased a number of hand-crafted items for its Scottish Crafts Collection. The aim of the collection was to inform the public of craft production in Scotland through touring exhibitions and education programmes. When the Scottish Craft Council was wound up, the collection was transferred to the National Museums of Scotland.
