RecordHandle< 1 of 1 > Back from Newstead, Roxburghshire
HandleThis bronze handle for a small casket was found during excavations at the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used sometime between 80 and 180 AD. One loop survives of the handle, but the other has broken off. The central section has a raised moulding, repeated near the loops. Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout, daily life and equipment in Roman camps in Scotland. Although wooden caskets and chests rarely survive, the metal fittings, handles and keys are evidence of their use by soldiers in the camp.
