Hammerstone

This hammerstone made from a cobble was found at Buchan in Aberdeenshire. It could date any time from 8000 BC to 1100 AD. A number of plain stone balls have been found at Buchan.

The cobble shows signs of heavy use as a hammerstone.

Carved stone balls without any decoration are difficult to date or to be certain of their function. Some were used as missiles, while others were used as rubbers or hammerstones.
