Grid iron (piece)

This piece of an iron grid iron was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used for cooking sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The short leg of the piece would have rested on the ground, with a similar leg, now missing, on the other side. A similar piece would have been parallel to this one, with metal cross pieces fastening through the nail holes.

Iron was widely used by the Romans for tools, weapons and fittings. Blacksmiths made a wide range of objects, using tools not that different from those in use today. The ironwork at Newstead is particularly well preserved.
