Pot with fruit

This ceramic pot containing dried grapes and dates is among a number of grave goods placed in the rich burial of a woman and child at Qurneh in Egypt, sometime in the 17th Dynasty. The woman may have been a queen.

The shallow red pot preserved the remains of dried grapes and dates. It was placed in the burial between a stool and the coffin.

In ancient Egypt, the dead were often buried with a variety of goods that symbolised important aspects of funerary belief. This burial is exceptionally wealthy in food offerings, jewellery and furniture, all the more remarkable since it dates from the 17th Dynasty, a period when Egypt was politically divided and relatively impoverished.
