Altar

This stone altar was found at the site of the Roman fort at Camelon in Stirlingshire. It was carved sometime between 80 and 165 AD.

Unlike most altars, this one has no inscription. It may have been unused, or perhaps it was set up in an exposed place, and a painted inscription has worn away.

An altar was a public sign of a Roman's beliefs. On each, the donor's name as well as the god's was usually recorded. Offerings were made in the hollow on the top. Wine was often poured onto the altar.
