This iron object of unknown function was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

The object has a cylinder at one end through which a ring passes. A rod which broadens out into a loop is attached to the broad end of the cylinder.

Iron was widely used by the Romans for tools, weapons and fittings. Blacksmiths made a wide range of objects, working with tools not that different from those in use today. The ironwork at Newstead is particularly well preserved.
