Fashion plate, from La Nouvelle Mode

This fashion plate is from La Nouvelle Mode, a weekly fashion journal published in Paris. Dated 1910, the plate is one in a collection of plates from the journal, compiled in a book entitled 'Book of Fashion Plates from La Nouvelle Mode: Fashions 1908-1911'.

The plate is numbered 40. Its French title translates as 'For the fine days of June'.

The Edwardian era (1900-10) was an age of excess and ostentation. In France it was known as 'La Belle epoque'. Fashions were designed for the tall, mature woman while at the same time, younger women, who may have started work, were looking for tailor-made clothes.
