Cake stand

This cake stand, also known as a 'comport', is one of four low stands from a pink porcelain dessert service made by the Glasgow potters J. and M.P. Bell & Company. The company started producing this type of porcelain service in the 1860s.

The top of the cake stand is decorated with a hand-painted view of Scottish scenery entitled 'Monzie Castle'.

Bells, one of the largest Scottish potteries, were aiming for the expanding middle-class market, with its growing interest in a romantic view of the Scottish landscape. Many Glasgow brides bought services similar to this for their best china cupboard.
