made in Italy
This maiolica dish was made at Umbria or Lazio in Italy in the early 16th century. It is entirely reconstructed from pieces that were found, according to the Milanese vendor, 'in houses of Piano Scarano and Canino, small villages near Viterbo'.
The dish is covered with greyish tin-glaze and painted in blue with a cross-motive in a medallion surrounded by a border of S-scrolls.
