made at Pesaro, Italy
This maiolica dish was made at the Ignazio Callegari Factory in Pesaro in Italy between 1816 and 1822.
The deep oval dish is painted in colours with the scene of the Baptism of Christ and festoons and bouquets of flowers. It has a Greek inscription from a Greek Orthodox Service in two bands. The dish has four lion feet and is signed 'IC/F Pesaro'.
The inscription in the bands translates as 'While you were, my Lord, baptised in the waters of Jordan, the Trinity was revealed; and the voice of the Father who gave birth to you (together with the Holy Spirit) affirmed that you are his dear Son; and the Holy Spirit in bodily form like a dove affirmed the truth of the words of the Father. Because you were revealed in the world and You threw light on the world, we glorify You.' The inscription on the image translates as 'This is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased'.
