This sculpture of natural and man-made fibres was made by the Scottish artist Susan Brotchie in 1985. It formed part of the Scottish Crafts Collection, which was transferred to the National Museums of Scotland when the Scottish Craft Council was wound up.
The three-dimensional soft sculpture depicts a sardine tin with its lid rolled back, revealing sardines and a mermaid.
Susan Brotchie was born in Edinburgh in 1948, where she still lives and works. She has a background as an illustrator, and explores 3-dimensional effects in her 'fabrications'.
