Figure, of BuddhaThis bronze sculptured seated figure of Buddha was found in Ceylon (modern Sri Lanka) in 1826. It was discovered on the site of an ancient temple in the neighbourhood of the King's Palace, Kandy, where it is supposed to have lain since the conversion of the King of Kandy to the Roman Catholic faith in the 15th century. The Buddha figure is seated on a lotus base. He has assumed Sattvaparyankasana, the position of meditation, with his hands resting in his lap. The right hand, palm turned upwards, lies in the palm of the left. The arrangement of the hands denotes meditation and is called 'Dhyanamudra'. The flaming motif on the Buddha's head (Siraspata) refers to his enlightenment. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
