made in London
This woman's black coat and hat were made in London. The woollen coat dates from between around 1898 and 1901. The silk and velvet hat dates from around 1900-1 and was made by the court hatter, Gainsborough, of 19 South Molton Street.
The coat collar has insertions of red velvet. The hat is decorated with chiffon and feathers.
The late 1890s' shape became very smooth over the hips, with long tight shaped sleeves ending in a flared cuff over the hand. The fullness at the top of the sleeve was reduced to a small puff. The skirt had a flared hem which was achieved by using pieces cut as segments of a circle. Pipings or insets of lace often disguised the joins in the fabric and added to the decorative effect.
