This man's pale blue woollen cloth suit dates from between around 1780 and 1790. It was made in Britain and probably worn by Sir Andrew Lauder-Dick, son of Andrew Lauder of Fountainhall and Isobel Dick of Grange.

The suit consists of a coat, waistcoat and breeches. All the items are lined with scarlet twilled silk and trimmed with silver thread and sequin buttons. The scarlet lining on the jacket is more visible than the lining on earlier jackets. The sleeves are very tight with deep narrow cuffs. The breeches are cut very tight.

By the 1770s gentlemen's suit coats had reduced skirts and wide front openings, exposing the breeches and the waistcoat. The side pleats sat on the back rather than on the sides. The waistcoat became tighter, shorter and sleeveless. Breeches tended to get longer and were fastened below the knee with a buckle.
