This box was made the carver John Graham (died 1926). It was made for his own family from materials left over from making a larger casket for presentation to Lord Fairfax, Admiral of the Fleet, in 1890. The timber used came from the Ravenswood Estate.

John Graham was a noted woodcarver and he carved furnishings for a number of Borders churches. The decoration of this box is in a neo-Renaissance style.
