Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. The plate dates from 1830 and illustrates women's wear from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.
The fitted satin coat with velvet cape is trimmed with rouleaux - strips of fabric loosely stuffed into tube-like shapes. The hat is made of satin.
Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany. Many were short lived but Le Journal des Dames et des Modes was one of the survivors and ran from 1797 to 1839.
