Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1824, the plate illustrates a day dress from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.
The dress is of jaconet - a thin cotton fabric like muslin. The hat is of Italian straw. The dress waistline has reverted back to its more natural position after the high-waisted classical line of the previous twenty years.
The size of the fashion plate was determined by the size of the magazine in which it appeared. The smaller, octavo-sized (23 cm x 15 cm) magazines from this time were often bound in volumes thus making it possible for the fashion plates to survive.
