Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des ModesThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1820, the plate illustrates a woman's coat and hat from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'. The coat, also known as a 'pelisse', is of satin, lined with the down of swans. The velvet hat is decorated with feathers and sits on a bonnet of tulle - a thin fine netting of silk. Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany.
