Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1820, the plate illustrates a woman's coat and hat from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.
The coat, also known as a 'pelisse', is of satin, lined with the down of swans. The velvet hat is decorated with feathers and sits on a bonnet of tulle - a thin fine netting of silk.
Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany. Many were short lived but Le Journal des Dames et des Modes was one of the survivors and ran from 1797 to 1839.
