Fashion plate, from Le Journal des Dames et des ModesThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1816, the plate illustrates six hats of various types from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'. Included in the plate are straw hats, cotton bonnets and an example, (bottom left), of a bonnet made of 'Gros de Naples' - an Italian silk with a corded surface. Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany.
