Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris from 1797 until 1839. Dating from 1815, the plate illustrates menswear from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.
The French title translates as, 'Outfit of Woollen Cloth, Knitted trousers'. The plate is signed, 'H' in the bottom left hand corner and 'B' in the bottom right.
Tight-fitting ankle-length trousers such as these were called 'pantaloons' and were popular for evening dress. In order to achieve this close fit they were made of an elastic material such as jersey.
