Add to albumThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Journal des Dames et des Modes, a ladies' magazine published in Paris. The plate dates from 1803 and illustrates two day dresses from a series entitled, 'Costume Parisien'.
These dresses are typical of the Neoclassical period (around 1755 to 1805), when styles were influenced by Greece and Rome. The waistlines are high and the skirts fall to the ground in folds. The material used at this time was predominantly white.
Towards the end of the 18th century, the first fashion magazines began appearing in England, France and Germany. Many were short lived but Le Journal des Dames et des Modes was one of the survivors and ran from 1797 to 1839.
