Fashion plate, from La Belle AssembleéThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Belle Assembleé, a ladies' monthly magazine published in London. The plate illustrates a yellow evening dress and appeared in issue no 13 of the New Series on 1 January, 1811. Dress styles at this time were influenced by Greece and Rome with a strong emphasis on the vertical line. Waistlines were high and skirts fell in folds to the ground. Hair was arranged with elaborate curls on top of the head and loose ringlets around the face. During the first nine months of publication, the plates contained in La Belle Assembleé were not coloured. However, competition from a rival magazine forced the publisher, John Bell, to issue two forms of the magazine - one plain and one with coloured plates.
