Add to albumThis wooden commemorative mask of the late Princess Diana, 'The Queen of Hearts', was made by Joe David of the Nuu-chah-nulth tribe on the north-west coast of North America.
The mask is made from painted cedar and alder wood and real human blonde hair, and it shows Princess Diana's face, wearing a tiara inset with abalone shell. Although a portrait mask, it has design features characteristic of NW Coast American objects.
Joe David is an active tribal artist, famous for his British Airways tailfin design. He had once met Princess Diana, and shortly before her death had a vision of her, asking him for a hug. He carved the mask after she died as a commemorative work of art
