made in Cumnock, Ayrshire
This glazed redware mug was made at Cumnock in Ayrshire in the second half of the 19th century. The outside of the mug is inscribed with a motto while the inside contains a ceramic frog.
The inscription reads 'There's aye some water whaun the stirkie droons'.
A pottery was originally established in Cumnock by James Taylor in 1792. In the second half of the 19th century it became well known for its 'couthy' motto ware.
