Plate, commemorating a marriageThis glazed earthenware plate was probably made by the Nautilus Porcelain Company of Possil Pottery in Glasgow. It commemorates the marriage, on 18 February, 1908, of Mr & Mrs Russell. The gilt dedication in the centre of the plate reads 'A Present/to/Mr. & Mrs. Russell/Married/18th. February 1908'. Founded originally as the Saracen Pottery in the Possilpark area of Glasgow in 1875, this firm began manufacturing a wide range of domestic wares, changing its name to the Possil Pottery Co. in 1895. In 1894 the Nautilus Porcelain Company was formed, producing a range of soft paste porcelain wares influenced by Worcester and Limoges. This company then bought the now bankrupt Possil Pottery Co. in 1896. They continued producing both earthenware and porcelain until the company was forced to close in 1911. In 1918 the works were acquired by Tennants the brewers and produced stoneware bottles and jars until 1948. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
