Baptismal basin
Add to album

This pewter baptismal basin was used at the Parish Church at East Kilbride in South Lanarkshire. It was probably made in London in 1739.

The interior of the basin is engraved 'EAST KILBRIDE PARISH KIRK, 1739'. The exterior bears the coat-of-arms of the Eglinton family and is marked 'MADE IN LONDON'.

In the Presbyterian Church, baptism is one of the two sacraments conferring membership of the church on the subject. The other is communion. Both sacraments are carried out in the face of the congregation.
